About the Longship Project

Launched on September 21, 2020, the Longship project is the Norwegian government’s flagship initiative for CO₂ management. It demonstrates how CO₂ can be captured from industrial sources, transported, and safely stored beneath the seabed.

CO₂ will be captured at Heidelberg Materials’ cement plant in Brevik and at Hafslund Celsio’s waste-to-energy plant in Oslo. Once captured, the CO₂ will be liquefied and transported by specially designed ships to the Northern Lights facility in Øygarden, near Bergen. There, it will be injected and permanently stored 2,600 meters below the seabed in the North Sea. Northern Lights JV DA—a joint venture between Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies, are in charge of transport and storage of CO2
